Into The Trees - Meet The Artist - Happy Stuff Studio
We caught up with Victoria, the big smile and wonderful soul behind the very aptly named Happy Stuff Studio! With her illustration background, Victoria brings a whole other level of character and cuteness to her acrylic jewellery pieces which are the perfect amount of simplistic and intricate at the same time. Scroll on to see what we mean and find out where her inspiration comes from!
Hi Victoria! What is your creative process? How did you create your pieces for Into The Trees?
'Process' sounds very organised and technical and I am neither of those things! I tend to work seasonally and erratically, meaning that sometimes I have lots of ideas and other times none. There is no rhyme or reason to it, I'm sure lots of other creatives will relate. At least I hope so?! I was really grateful for the brief for Into The Trees as I'd been in a bit of a creative slump, and this really got the ideas flowing again. Before I knew it I'd sketched up about 12 little ideas, slept on it for a couple of days, and when I went back to the sketches it was Ms Moth who was calling to me. I did a digital mock up in the gold tones (my personal fave) but because I know how much you and your customers love a bit of colour, I got her sampled in pink and green too and she is just cute as a button in both.
What or who is your biggest creative influences?
As a kid it was all magic and fantasy, making potions in the garden, drawing maps of made up, faraway places. I'm also a big picture book nerd, I love 60s-70s children's illustration, especially.
I feel like there’s a bit of magic, or a story everywhere; from picking up a rock or lifting a log to see the tiny world underneath; the pattern of overlapping leaves overhead, finding cool sticks covered in lichen. I celebrate the everyday in nature, what I see in my garden or the local area. Slugs, but make them glittery.
Do you have a favourite place to get Into The Trees?
Ooh lots of places! We try and get out to Epping Forest a few times a year. I love seeing how the woods change throughout the year. There's a particular den that my kid loves seeking out and playing in, it's by a little stream and when the conditions are right there's some fab fungi to be found. Honestly though I just like being outside in general. As long as there's some trees, birds, bit of moss, I'm happy.
What’s coming up next for you?
I'm currently promoting my latest collection Big Bunz (nothing to do with woods or nature!) which is a celebration of summery nibbles. Once that's done I'm taking a nice long break to our family pueblo in North West Spain, where there will be a LOT of rambling in the surrounding hills, splashing about in rivers and communing with cows, before diving headfirst into my favourite time of year; Halloween.
