Emma is the brilliant creative soul behind Fairytale Collars based in Devon. I have known Emma for many years after meeting through instagram and I own many of her beautiful handmade felt collars. We absolutely love the creative and playful way Emma creates her pieces, they are absolutely stunning and so incredibly well made. Fairytale Collars & hello DODO are the perfect match! We are so chuffed to have her as part of our Into The Trees show!
Hi Emma! What is your creative process? How did you create your pieces for Into The Trees?
For new collar designs I usually get ideas once I'm in the flow of making my regular collar orders and being in that creative zone. I'm usually thinking of a theme, usually a season and thinking what I can turn into a collar. Sometimes ideas come out of nowhere though, I might see a colour combo whilst out and about and feel inspired.
I had wanted to do specific butterflies for awhile now because I love how each one is different and whilst making the butterflies I thought a caterpillar would be cute as a kind of before and after.
What or who is your biggest creative influences?
The Seasons, colour and nature I might also see a cute craft item or ribbon and that will be my starting point for something new.
Do you have a favourite place to get Into The Trees?
Yes, my local park has some wonderful trees.
I get into nature a lot because we have a dog - Koda who needs lots of walking so we're out in amongst the trees most days. I love to see the changes that come with the seasons and to see what birds, insects, animals I can find amongst the trees.
What’s coming up next for Fairytale Collars?
This month Fairytale Collars is 10 years old!
I'm just grateful to still be putting my little creations out into the world, it brings me joy to create and hopefully joy to the wearer.
I've also made other things such as hair scrunchies, hair bows, clips, earrings and pins so I'd like to make some more of those too.
